The sounds of a sailing ship on a calm night, the thrill of handling heavy weather, dolphins diving before the bow, broadening your horizons, making friends, learning to respect, trust and care for the sea and your crew mates, gaining a real sense of achievement… imagine all this and you are just beginning to imagine the adventure of participating in a voyage on the Windeward Bound.
You will visit remote islands, sheltered pristine beaches, hobnob with whales, dolphins, seals and other wildlife, visit some of the world’s great natural wilderness areas, eat well, sleep well and have the time of your life.
The Windeward Bound is a brigantine, modern, but traditional below decks and entirely traditional on and above deck. This beautiful brigantine has become a National Icon and has been described as a National treasure.
She has recently circumnavigated Australia emulating the discoveries and honouring the 1802 voyage of Matthew Flinders, whose logs and journals provide the earliest observations of many parts of the Australian coast. He recorded flora and fauna, as well as the many contacts with the indigenous Australians.
The voyage and adventure is about you learning how to sail a square rigger, re-visiting places discovered by Matthew Flinders and other early explorers and places not normally accessible by any other means. WINDEWARD BOUND TRUST – THE MISSION The brigantine "Windeward Bound” is a 33 metre symbol of enterprise and commitment to provide youth with an opportunity to enjoy and learn skills otherwise out of their reach.
The future of the Trust is tied to the development and training of youth with particular emphasis on those in dire need; made to feel helpless by financial, social, lifestyle or family circumstances
The Windeward Bound Trust, established in 1993, is committed to the relief of helplessness, the development of work and social skills and the delivery of personal growth experiences for young people
The Windeward Bound Trust also aims to foster good character and a spirit of enterprise in the youth of Tasmania and Australia generally, including youth disadvantaged or hampered by circumstances who could not otherwise participate
It is the principal philosophy of the Trust that no young person should ever miss out on the Windeward Bound opportunity because of personal circumstances or lack of funds WINDEWARD BOUND TRUST – THE ORGANISATIONThe Windeward Bound Trust is an approved charity registered with the AUSTRALIAN TAX OFFICE. The Trust has a Board of Trustees and a volunteer Advisory and Management Board with a wide range of successful business experience.
The ship was built by volunteers and is crewed and maintained entirely by its volunteer base.
Financially, the Windeward Bound Trust is funded mainly by operational income, the generous donations of the supporting public and continuing support of our sponsors. There are no salaried officers and 100% of all income received remains in the Trust to meet the costs of operating the ship and to provide scholarships for those in most need.
It is the Boards intention that in the years ahead, the ships operating and maintenance cost will gradually be met by increased donor streams thereby enabling the Windeward Bound Trust to increase the number of voyage berths for those in most need, and reduce the current dependence on commercial activities |
